As we plan for our fall opening, we look forward to becoming acquainted with our new families and re-acquainted with our returning friends. We are confident that together we can develop a warm, mutually cooperative relationship, and continue to build an outstanding early childhood learning center.
Please note that our primary method of communication will be through our weekly Nursery School Happenings email, which will contain important information regarding upcoming events, school reminders, synagogue activities and much more. It is imperative that these emails are read weekly as there will be integral details that you will not want to miss. Additionally, you will be privy to moments in your child’s school day through a Daily Reflection that will be sent out by your child's teachers.
We have listed below a number of documents that we ask you to please click on to complete. These forms should be returned to our office either via email to nursery@bethelnr.org, or in person by Friday, August 23. Please be aware that no child can be legally admitted to school without a completed medical form.
Monday, September 9 is the first day of school. (The entire school calendar is attached below.). The first few sessions may be somewhat abbreviated for certain classes, to facilitate a smooth transition into school. This staggered schedule, entitled Beginning Days, will be given to you by your child’s teachers.
During the week of August 26 and thereafter, our teachers will be engaged in Staff Development meetings and classroom set-up. In addition, in order to facilitate an easy adjustment to school, the Nursery School staff will start the school year with home visits. Your child’s teacher will phone you at the end of August to schedule a mutually convenient time to visit. We will attempt to accommodate your work schedules to the best of our ability and ask for your flexibility in this process. Visits will only be scheduled after we have received confirmation from the Business office that all financial obligations have been met.
We hope you share our excitement as we anticipate the beginning of the school year. If you have any questions, please call the Nursery School office at (914) 235-2700 x250. We hope that you are having an amazing start of summer! If your Teens are off on their summer adventures, please share their address and we'll send them some mail!
While many Teens are enjoying their summers, we want to share what our Teen programming will look like for next year. We envision our Teen programming as having multiple avenues that provide myriad access points for our Teen Community.
These avenues are:
Education Teen Collab & JewishU
Leadership Programs & Social Events Teen Leaders, Hadracha, Monthly Teen Events
Shabbat & Holiday Involvement
Education
Both the Teen Collab (8th-10th Grade) and JewishU (11th-12th Grade) meet at the Midwestchester JCC on Thursday evenings. You can learn more about Teen Collab and JewishU at two online information sessions on July 10th and August 14th. (Please note that these programs are open to Jewish Teens across Westchester, not just those affiliated with Beth El or other partnering organizations.)
Teen Collab is a creative and dynamic educational experience for teens (grades 8–10) interested in deepening their Jewish identity, taking their Jewish education to the next level, and meeting other Jewish teens across Westchester.
The Teen Collab will meet on Thursdays from 6:30-8 pm, and will be broken into three modules. Sign up for one, two, or all three, based on your interests and schedules. Each module costs $300 for Beth El members, or you can sign up for all three for a 10% discount.
JewishU is a new program for 11th and 12th graders in which they take college-level Jewish classes (accredited by top universities) at the JCCMW to earn college credit! Two yearly classes, both running on Thursday evenings, will be offered beginning this fall. The courses offered include Hebrew 101 or History of Jewish Immigration. Each course will meet weekly on Thursdays from 6:30-9 pm from September to May. The Hebrew 101 course, accredited by Syracuse University, will cost $1700 plus a registration fee. The History of Jewish Immigration course, accredited by American Jewish University, will cost $1300 plus a registration fee.
Leadership Programs & Social Events Teen Leaders helps brainstorm, plan, prepare for, advertise and attend our monthly special events. They meet monthly to prepare for upcoming events, and are supported by the Teen Advisor.
Hadracha (Religious School Assistants) supports our Teens as they are active assistants and role models in our Religious School. There is a broad spectrum of opportunities for teens to volunteer, whether helping out in the office or supporting teachers in classrooms. Additionally, Hadracha meets regularly during Religious School hours to empower our Teens with knowledge, skills, community, and opportunities for reflection and growth. Hadracha can take place on Thursdays, Sundays, or both.
Teen Social Events occur monthly, so bring your friends! Programs include lounge nights, chesed (service) events, Israel-related programs, Shabbat/holiday programs like the Purim Carnival, fun activities like baseball games, and other activities you might suggest!
Teen Shabbat & Holiday Experiences
Teens have the opportunity to lead Shabbat services in many ways–through participating in our Teen Shabbat services (occur bimonthly), reading Torah or leading services in the Main Sanctuary, and by taking over Shabbat services for Youth and Family Engagement Shabbat!
If you are interested in reading Torah, leading services, or reading Megillah, we have opportunities for mentorship and support both from Cantor Gaby and from your peers who mentor new readers and leaders. Please contact Cantor Gaby for more information.
Teens are also invited for Shabbat dinners in the rabbis’ homes, which is always a really special event for our Teens and clergy.
For more information about our Teen opportunities, please email Director of Youth & Family Engagement Alyssa Berman at aberman@bethelnr.org.
Beth El Synagogue Center 1324 North Avenue New Rochelle, NY 10804 (914) 235-2700
I am writing this annual “dues” letter following a year unlike any other. More than ever, Beth El has provided all of us comfort, connection, and hope as we navigated the aftermath of October 7th. We have gathered to provide each other solace, to sing, and to hear words of Torah as we have grappled with the events in our beloved Israel and the anti-semitism in our own country. And, we have continued to celebrate each other's simchas, joined in inspiring Shabbat and Holiday services and participated in community social events, SMART activities, and education for tot, youth and adults.
Beth El is a vibrant community and I am excited about the rich spiritual programming and dynamic educational opportunities that await us in the coming year, under the leadership of Rabbi Schuck, Rabbi Sitkin, and Cantor Gaby, as well as Rabbi Bedo who will be joining our community later this summer. The synagogue’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. Our professional staff, our Audit and Finance Committee and the Beth El Board of Trustees carefully review and consider the budget each year, including a review of the existing dues. For the 2024-25 year Beth El’s dues are increasing by only 3%, a rate well below the current rate of inflation. Due to ongoing security needs following recent events, we have found it necessary to increase our security contribution. The security fee will be increased to $385 from the previous amount of $350. This adjustment is crucial in light of the increased security we have put in place in the past year and this fee remains well below the actual costs of providing security to our community. In the coming week, you will receive your annual dues bill.
We require payment for membership prior to the High Holidays. Please make every effort to pay as soon as possible. Your prompt payment is very helpful to the synagogue’s cash flow, financial planning and secures your High Holiday seats. If you wish to establish a payment plan to pay your bill monthly (or some other time frame), please contact accounting@bethelnr.org.
We never want finances to be a barrier to membership and Beth El prides itself on working with each individual family who is experiencing financial hardship to adjust their dues accordingly. If you are experiencing hardship, please reach out to Elizabeth Clain, Executive Director, at (914) 235-2700, ext. 225 or eclain@bethelnr.org.
The clergy team and lay leaders are already working on the high holidays, and designing services intended to bring opportunities for reflection, singing, and learning. We’ll be in touch later in the summer with more information regarding the high holidays.
Finally, I want to thank you for your commitment to our synagogue. It is more important than ever that we stand together.
